America and a Geopolitical Europe: Transatlantic Relations in an Era of Global Conflicts

Europe is seeing geopolitical shockwaves that are changing the region and causing far-reaching political, economic, and humanitarian effects. Approximately two months ago, Russia’s war on Ukraine started with predictions that Kyiv would fall almost immediately. That’s not happened. In fact, the conflict is degenerating into months of fighting and instability in the region, forcing Europe to confront its role in the world.

Consequently, the ongoing war is a major contributor to higher inflation rates, food prices, and energy costs across the world. This feeds into increasing concerns that the global economy is flying into a perfect storm as Europe, China, and the United States are predicted to head into economic downturns later this year. This is after more than 2-years of pandemic lockdowns, record high unemployment rates, and shaken public confidence in government.

It’s clear that the world is at a tipping point as Europe struggles to reinvent itself in the midst of conflict.
