Join the World Affairs Council of Charlotte (WACC) for lunch on Tuesday, October 18 as we host the Ambassador of Italy to the United States Mariangela Zappia. She will talk about Italy’s diplomatic and trade relationship with the U.S. and offer insight into ways to continue strengthening the cooperation between the two countries.
As a longtime career diplomat in the Italian foreign service, Ambassador Zappia will offer her perspective on Italy’s role in the world and regional alliances, including NATO. In addition, she will address Italy’s response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, European politics, and geopolitical tsunamis affecting communities worldwide.

Biography:
Mariangela Zappia is the Italian Ambassador to the United States of America. A career diplomat with over thirty-five years of experience, she is the first woman in her country to hold this position, as she was the first woman Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations in New York and to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). She has also been the first woman Diplomatic Advisor to the Italian Prime Minister and G7/G20 Sherpa.

- Head of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and Balkans Department for Development Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome (2007);
- From 2003 to 2006 she dedicated herself full time to her family;
- First Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the UN in New York (2000-2003);
- First Counsellor, at the Italian Embassy in Brussels (1997-2000);
- Counsellor, in charge of the relations with Italian press and media at the Press and Information Service and Office of the Spokesperson of the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Rome (1994-1997);
- She had previously served at the Consulate General of Italy in New York (1990-1993) and at the Italian Embassy in Dakar (1986-1990).
