WACC Council Scholar Award Program

The World Affairs Council of Charlotte is pleased to announce the Margaret Gragg Bissell 2024-2025 Council Scholar Award Program. This signature WACC international education initiative offers a unique opportunity for selected educators to travel out of the country and bring their experiences abroad home to their school community in North Carolina.

The 2024-2025 Council Scholar Award Program is generously supported by The Margaret Gragg Bissell Teacher-Centered International Education Endowment.

Education Partners

We are looking for internationally-minded educators and administrators who are currently working to provide a global perspective in their classrooms, have a desire to immerse themselves in an international topic or region, and are enthusiastic about sharing their experience with their students and colleagues. The applicant must be a K-12 grade teacher or staff member with significant student contact in a Mecklenburg, Iredell, Cabarrus, Lincoln, Gaston or Union County school (public or independent schools).

The 2024-2025 Council Scholar application must be emailed to cklopp@charlotte.edu

The Council Scholar Program gives the recipient visibility and recognition and provides rewarding educational experiences. The 2024-2025 Council Scholars will receive the following:
  1. Recognition at our 2025 World Citizen Award Dinner
  2. Invitations to special WACC programs and dinner receptions
  3. Lifetime WACC membership
  4. The opportunity to coordinate seminars and roundtable discussions with past scholars
  5. A grant of up to $3500 for:
    • Formal study abroad program or self-guided professional development itinerary with a teacher-centered and/or student-centered focus
    • International conference attendance
    • International seminars or workshops abroad
    • Professional development programs in another country
    • Teaching abroad (e.g., teaching English abroad, training teachers in the developing world, etc.)
    • Language immersion classes or workshops in another country

The program is designed to honor exemplary educators and enhance the scholar’s international educational experiences further to impact their classrooms, schools, and communities.
