Though a US–China conflict is far from inevitable, major tensions are building in the Asia-Pacific region. These strains are the result of historical enmity, cultural divergence, and deep ideological estrangement, not to mention apprehensions fueled by geopolitical competition and the closely related “security dilemma.”

The World Affairs Council of Charlotte will host WorldQuest together with Academic WorldQuest, our high school version of WQ, for the 6th time since 2010. WorldQuest was created by the WACC and has grown into a nationwide international knowledge competition played by councils around the country. The thrill of competition and enthusiasm for world affairs has made this program one of our most successful education initiatives in the greater Charlotte area.

WACC Annual Meeting with U.S. Ambassador Mark Erwin (1999-2001), (June 17th, 2015)

Join the World Affairs Council of Charlotte on June 17th with U.S. Ambassador Mark Erwin who will share his perspectives on the renewed diplomatic ties between Cuba and the United States. In addition, he will address future opportunities for economic and cultural opportunities for the two nations while providing his assessment on the challenges that will arise as Cuba and the U.S. normalize relations. On April 11, 2015, Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro shook hands at the Summit of the Americas in Panama, marking the first meeting between a U.S. and Cuban head of state since the two countries cut their ties in 1961. This inaugural meeting came four months after the President announced that the U.S. would restore diplomatic ties with Cuba.

Dr. Marie-Claire Marroum, current WACC Board Member, was born in Jerusalem and raised in Lebanon. She will share her culinary secrets in a fun and entertaining atmosphere in this hands-on Spanish themed cooking class. Participants will learn techniques for making items such as Paella. Come ready to learn from our expert international cook, sample traditional Spanish foods and wines while meeting other young professionals.
