WACC Global Cafe Conversation Club
Public Space & Architecture in a Post-COVID World
Join us for WACC’s Global Cafe Conversation Club – the Council’s version of a “book club.” You’ll read two articles on a global topic, discuss them with your peers, and engage with the world from your own home!
For this meeting, we will discuss the ways in which COVID-19 has affected public spaces and architecture around the world. This discussion will be led by Paul Kardous, Principal at Row Architecture. Read Paul’s biography here.
In recent months, we have arrived at a new juncture of disease and architecture, where fear of contamination controls what kinds of spaces we want to be in. As tuberculosis shaped modernism, so COVID-19 and our collective experience of staying inside for months on end will influence architecture’s near future. Architects and other designers who have devoted efforts to creating public places that encourage gathering and sociability now say their task is to make congregating in these spaces possible again — and perhaps to achieve some community-enhancing goals in the process.
