Event Details

At the beginning of 2022, the container shipping sector outlook was dominated by high demand, sky-rocketing freight rates, and continued supply chain congestion, all of which looked set to send carrier profitability to new records.

2023 has shown us a different story.

The global shipping and logistics industry has been dealt a double punch with energy pressures and regional security issues due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the continual effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Slowing trade worldwide, reduced consumer demand, and inflation has become tipping points for economies worldwide.

Despite the market normalizing due to decreasing demand and easing supply chain congestion, container freights are experiencing shipping volatility and decline. In fact, container ships remain empty in major ports in China and North America despite attempts to revitalize the movement of goods across the globe.

What factors will most affect ocean shipping as it enters these stormy seas?

With a fleet of 252 modern container ships and a total transport capacity of 1.8 million TEU, Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world’s leading liner shipping companies, with more than 14,5000 employees and 400 offices in 137 countries. Join the World Affairs Council of Charlotte for the WACC CEO Series luncheon with Stuart Sandlin, the President of Hapag-Lloyd, Region North America, on Thursday, April 13, 2023, as he offers his expert insight into global supply issues and what shipping companies are doing to increase efficiency, accelerate consumer confidence, and reduce inflationary pricing of goods shipped.
