Biography
Summary:
Dr.
Sommer
was
born
in
1930
in
Constance,
Germany
and
grew
up
in
Schwäbisch
Gmünd.
He
studied
History,
Political
Science
and
International
Relations
in
Sweden,
at
Manchester
College,
North
Manchester,
Ind.,
and
the
University
of
Chicago;
Sommer
wrote
his
Ph.D.
thesis
on
“Germany
and
Japan
between
the
Powers,
1935-1940“
(University
of
Tübingen,
1962).
He
was
a
1960
participant
in
Henry
Kissinger’s
International
Summer
Seminar,
Harvard
University
and
a
reader
for
Political
Science
at
the
University
of
Hamburg
from
1967-1970.
In
1972,
Sommer
lectured
at
Harvard
University’s
Center
for
European
Studies.
