Biography

Armando Varricchio is the Ambassador of the Italian Republic to the United States. He presented his credentials to President Obama on March 2, 2016.

Ambassador Varricchio joined the Foreign Service in 1986. Throughout his career he has held many important positions abroad and in Rome. He has served at the Italian Embassy in Budapest (1988-1992), the Permanent Representation to the EU (1992-1996), in Washington, DC (2002-2006) as Head of the Economic, Trade and Scientific Affairs Section. From 2009-2012 he was Ambassador of Italy to Serbia.

In Rome he has been appointed to key positions within the Government and Italian Institutions. He served as Head of the Europe and Asia Desk in the Prime Minister’s Office, Chief of Staff to the Minister for European Affairs, Deputy Diplomatic Advisor to the President of the Republic and Deputy Secretary General at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome.

He has also served as Diplomatic Advisor and Sherpa G7/G8 to the President of the European Commission.

Prior to his current assignment in Washington, he served as Diplomatic Advisor and G7/G20 Sherpa for the Prime Minister (2013 to 2016).

Born in Venice in 1961, he graduated with honors in Political Sciences from the University of Padua in 1985.

Ambassador Varricchio is Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

He is married to Micaela Barbagallo. They have two sons, Federico and Umberto.
