The World Affairs Council of Charlotte (WACC) was founded in 1983 as an outreach program of UNC Charlotte and its Office of International Programs. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, it is supported by private funding from individual and corporate member dues and contributions. As a regional center for education and discussion of world affairs, the Council seeks to provide leadership for global thinking, believing that a broad perspective is necessary for effective competition in the global economy and for responsible citizenship in the increasingly interdependent political world.

The World Affairs Councils of America, with over 500,000 members and 87 affiliated organizations across the nation, honored our Council with the President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2007 during its Annual Conference held in February 2008. The President’s Award is awarded annually to Councils that have shown extraordinary innovation, growth, outreach, and impact. The World Affairs Council of Charlotte earned the distinction of being the most dynamic midsize Council in the nation for 2007.

"When I met with Jim Rogers one day this spring, he tossed back two double espressos in a single hour. A charming and natty 60-year-old, Rogers is the chief executive of the electric company Duke Energy. But he has none of the macho, cowboy stolidity you might expect in an energy C.E.O. Instead, he lives to brainstorm. He spends more than half his time on the road, a perennial fixture at wonky gatherings like the Davos World Economic Forum and the Clinton Global Initiative, corralling “clean energy” thinkers and listening eagerly to their ideas. The day we met, he was brimming with enthusiasm for a new approach to solar power. Solar is currently too expensive to make economic sense, according to Rogers, because the cost to put panels on a roof is greater than what a household would save on electricity. But what if Duke bought panels en masse, driving the price down, and installed them itself — free?" (More...)

Global Food Crisis: The Origins and Solutions - One Nations' Response; India ’s Food Security Scenario

Photo: Dr. M S Swaminathan, World Food Prize Winner 1987 (above)

Professor M S Swaminathan has been acclaimed by the TIME magazine as one of the twenty most influential Asians of the 20th century and one of the only three from India, the other two being Mahatma Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. The India Today, a leading journal of India , has described him as one of the 60 most eminent Indians. He has been described by the United Nations Environment Program as "the Father of Economic Ecology" because of his leadership of the ever-green revolution movement in agriculture and by Javier Perez de Cuellar, Secretary General of the United Nations, as "a living legend who will go into the annals of history as a world scientist of rare distinction"..

A plant geneticist by training, Professor Swaminathan's contributions to the agricultural renaissance of India have led to his being widely referred to as the scientific leader of the green revolution movement. His advocacy of sustainable agriculture leading to an ever-green revolution makes him an acknowledged world leader in the field of sustainable food security.
