Rachel Clarke, Kensington Elementary
School: Clarke, principal
of Kensington Elementary in Waxhaw travelled to Turkey on a
program for North Carolina Educators through World View in
Chapel Hill. Her experience will allow Clarke to educate her
school community first-hand on Turkish people and culture
though a variety of interactive opportunities. Clarke’s goal
is to witness her staff incorporating globalization in their
classrooms as a part of everyday activity, not just as an
“extra.”

Amanda
Cogan, Carmel Middle School:
Cogan, an English as a Second Language
(ESL) teacher at Carmel Middle School, visited bilingual
schools in Peru to observe Latin American curriculum. With a
better understanding of what her students learn before they
come to the U.S., she hopes to come up with strategies to
better serve the large Latino population at her school.
Cogan will also be able to improve her Spanish and better
communicate with the parents at Carmel Middle.

   Diana
DeMarco-Flohr, Mallard Creek High School:
A
9th-12th grade German teacher, DeMarco-Flohr used the funds
to attend the Goethe Institute, a widely-respected language
school in Munich, Germany. She plans to gather more cultural
material including authentic local literature for her
classes as well as prepare workshops for other German
teachers in CMS so that they can also take advantage of her
new resources.

Omar Newman, Hopewell High School:
A 9-12 grade Spanish teacher at
Hopewell High School, Newman attended 2-language programs in
Panama and Costa Rica. Newman used this opportunity to
improve his proficiency in Spanish and bring Latin-American
culture to life in his classroom. With his new knowledge and
skills, he also hopes to develop a high school student
association geared towards interaction and volunteer work
with Latino families. |
