We have had the wonderful opportunity of hosting thought-provoking speakers and foreign dignitaries who have opened our eyes to global issues and challenged our community to think about the world in a different way.

  • The Ambassador of France Gérard Araud shared his perspectives on ties between France and the United States and security concerns in the EU immediately following the bombing in Brussels.
  • The Ambassador of India Arun Singh provided insight on the growing partnership between India and the U.S. as leaders in the global fields of technology, security and education.
  • Robert Walker, President of the Population Institute shed light on issues of gender inequality, access to healthcare, and the pressing concerns of rapid population growth for some of the most vulnerable countries.
  • Consul General of the UAE Majid Al Suwaidi spoke about the strong business ties between the UAE and the U.S. and the potential for future partnership in business, finance, and development.
  • Gillian Tett from the Financial Times offered insight into the passing of Brexit, its implications for the global economy, and the similarities she observed in the polls of the U.S. presidential race.
  • Lynn Good Chairman, President & CEO of Duke Energy shared about the global energy industry and advancements in our region’s renewable energy profile.
  • John Ferriola President & CEO of Nucor Corporation provided his perspective on the global steel industry, Nucor’s leadership in recycling, and global trade policies.
  • Chuck Hagel, US Secretary of Defense (2013-2015) shared his perspective on the incoming Trump administration’s role in foreign policy and arising global security challenges.

The world we live in is in rapid transformation. From the rise of ISIS, to Brexit and the U.S. Presidential elections, this year has exemplified just how interconnected we are to people across the globe. Concerns regarding global security, international aid, and trade are on the forefront of discussions as we close out the year.

It’s without a doubt that World Affairs Council of Charlotte programming offers much needed context so that we have a better understanding about the intricacies of foreign policy, global security, population and demographic changes, economic and trade agreements, governance and conflict and how they influence our lives.
